saffie

These triplets are 'daughters' from a now depleted saffron mother bulb and I couldn't help think of poor, long suffering Saffie from the Ab Fab tv series.

Sunday market's olive oil, saffron and guinea fowl egg seller Angus snuck over to me while I was buying corncobs on Sunday with a brown paper bag and asked if I would like some saffron crocus bulbs.
'Alrighty' said I and until the pot is prepared they are tucked away in a cool place waiting for planting.
When planted...in the leanest and meanest of soil and sand mix..and sparked into action by the first watering, the bulb will flower in 30 days, producing a flower and the three precious stigma. Then the daughters will grow from mum and produce their own flowers and saffron.
At the end of the season each mum will have given 'birth' to a handful of daughters and she will, exhausted no doubt, wither away to leave a wreath of girls.
Collected and divided these will go on and do the same, hopefully.

Eventually enough for a paella!!
