King Lear

To the National to see King Lear. I don't like Lear, it leaves me cold. I was chatting to a Korean friend a few years ago and he dislikes the play too. He said he couldn't accept that daughters could be so disrespectful to their father. I think they must have nicer daughters in Korea.
This was a good production, Simon Russell Beale was excellent; I only went because it was him. And I mostly enjoyed it from the storm scene onwards although Poor Tom did sound like one of Michael Palin's characters in The Life of Brian - 'spare a talent for an old ex leper...' I can't stand Poor Tom. This one was covered in mud/excrement and naked. You've seen one penis in Lear, you've seen them all...
