Early evening I went to Besiktas with Robert for dinner at the Indian restaurant and afterwards we walked back to Ortakoy for coffee before taking a taxi for the last leg of the journey home. This was at the end of a very listless and lethargic grey day - feeling decidedly discombobulated. We had originally intended to go to the Pera Museum in Beyoglu, Taksim, this evening to attend the second Digital Concert - Berlin Philharmonic performance being streamed live from Germany organised by the Goethe Institute. We were really looking forward to this. Brahms Symphony No 3 and Debussy La Mer. Unfortunately we had to change our plans after the warning from the American Consulate to avoid the Taksim area this evening because of the demonstration planned to take place against the recent passing of a law that empowers the authorities to block access to any website without a court order and which also means that the official telecommunications agency will be able to "gather communications data about all internet users without any legal limits or restrictions" . (BBC News ). Turkish riot police are not famed for their gentle dispersal of crowds so it is best to avoid the area, unfortunately.

I took the photo as we walked to Ortakoy. The iron railings, the scraggy tree trying to hang on in the space between the wall and the railings and the shadows of both cast by the amber street lighting with it's flattening effect created an image that caught my eye, reminding me of an old fashioned horror movie film set. All metaphors intended.
