2.5 million Syrian Refugees

Before this tragic Civil War broke out, about 3 years ago, the population of Syria was approximately 23 million people.

As of February 24, 2014 (yesterday), there are now officially 2.5 million REGISTERED Syrian refugees that have fled from Syria since March 2011. Over 6 million Syrians that are IDPs (Internally Displaced Persons) and sadly, 130,000 Syrians have died.

I stress the term "registered" because there is a large number of Syrians that have fled their country and are currently residing in other countries such as Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey, Iraq, Egypt, etc. that are not actually registered yet. For example, right now there are currently about 560,000 Syrian refugees registered in Jordan, when unregistered Syrian refugees are added, its over 600,000 people total.

I was reading reports on it today while I stayed home sick from both class and work and the UN is estimating that there will be approximately 4 million Syrian refugees by the end of 2014. Its just horrible. All peace talks are on hold currently and it seems like there is no progress being made towards peace or a long term solution to help Syrians. Its just so sad!

To end on a little happier note: Recently, the UK declared that they will accept Syrian refugees now, so thats something of a good thing. Better than nothing!
