Saturday 21 November 2009: Strike Breaker

So back in September I blipped the plight of the refuse collectors (bin men) in Leeds. Well that was the 9th day of the strike, now we are into the 11th week! The bins piled up for a while, but the council brought in strike breakers, or temporary staff and private support firms, using their language. My father would refer to them as Scabs, I think I agree.

Anyway, the Yorkshire Evening post hinted that the strike was nearly over, not because the council and the strikers have met and negotiated, but because service is almost back to normal. This is what breaks a strike, when there is no discernible effect.

These are some seriously low paid staff doing unpleasant jobs, who to go back to work will probably have to take a pay cut of up to a third and probably get no money for the time they were on strike.
