The Cobb , Lyme Regis

A monochrome of the Cobb this morning. Calm and sunny today but just a few weeks ago the Cobb - the artificial harbour at Lyme Regis- sustained damage in the ferocious winter storms ( there are several coned off areas not seen in this shot). The original Cobb dates back to the 13th century when it was made from wood. Sixteenth century drawings exist that show a stone construction . The major part of the Cobb was built in the early 19th century with a few more modern additions and repairs since then.

On a board on the inside of the Cobb wall next to the aquarium there is a famous quote which reads:

The gods do not deduct from man’s allotted span those hours spent in fishing!
