Faculae

The brighter patches visible towards the limb of the Sun are known as faculae. They are caused by magnetic activity like sunspots but exist just above the photosphere. They are associated with sunspots but do occur independently from them. Seen more easily at the Sun's limb because the underlying photosphere appears darker here, they are present right across the disc.
