a trip to Gumbo Limbo Nature Center

-watched grandaughter N today, as both her Mom and Dad were working. we spent a few hours at Gumbo Limbo, where there are large outdoor tanks of fish, a nature trail boardwalk, butterfly garden, many indoor educational displays, and a "hospital" for injured sea turtles as well as a marine life lab run by the local University. FAU. They also conduct night-time trips to the beach during turtle nesting season to see turtles laying eggs in a hole on the beach, if you're lucky enough to have one happen on your trip. And if baby turtles are found going in the wrong direction, or hatch during the day instead of night, when predators can find them too easily, they care for the babies and release them at a better time.
the turtle at bottom right can never be released, it has an air bubble under it's injured shell, and they have put weights on the strap on the rear end to help it maneuver in the large tank it shares with fish. They were adjusting the weights today, so had lifted it out.
(and we saw many butterflies in the garden, including this one- I think a Giant Swallowtail)
