Granny Gear!

Today’s ride from Sesimbra to Setubal was not far, but it was very hilly. We were up and down the entire 35K, with grades up to around 13% and down to around 16%, even on the switchbacks. I was very thankful for my “granny gear” which was very well used on the uphill stretches, and I was equally glad to have good brakes as I rode them hard on the downhill!

The day was a little rainy and at times hazy with fog, but it was a pleasant ride. The air was beautiful and fresh with the sea and forest of Arrabida Natural Park. There were some large vineyards and small villages along the road. The views of the coast and the sea were beautiful and tranquil.

This photo is near the end of the ride, looking back. The lush vegetation is hiding the roads that zigzag up and down the hills. At one point we were at the top of the large hill in the background.

We stayed in Setubal and had dinner at a fantastic restaurant owned by a Portugese-Canadian who was born in Winnipeg. It is a small world…
