A Suffolk Eye

A green thought

Four hundred years ago the mystic metaphysical poet Marvell wrote a poem about the glories of solitude in a garden. The fall of man, said he, was not due to any mere apple-schmapple - but because of Adam having to share the Garden with another person.

"Two paradises 'twere in one," said he, "To live in Paradise alone."

Crikey!

Me, I don't take his point -I like to share. But I agree with Marvell that the damp green quiet of a growing garden is very special. It frees and calms the mind - especially in springtime.

...Meanwhile the mind, from pleasure less,
Withdraws into its happiness :
The mind, that ocean where each kind
Does straight its own resemblance find ;
Yet it creates, transcending these,
Far other worlds, and other seas
Annihilating all that's made
To a green thought in a green shade...

And this picture's a visible representation of that green thought!
