Does Gus really think he can't be seen? This is him showing off his best sheepdog technique, when rounding up the two spaniels (who were totally oblivious to his herding activity). In Rowan's absence, the spaniels make a good substitute for honing his herd management skills.

A beautiful weather day, far too nice to be in the office, but Gus gave me cause to get out at lunchtime. At last I saw my first swallows of the season. My predictions about willow warblers being everywhere have not been realised, I have still heard only a few, but blackcaps are numerous. The excitement at work is the appearance of at least four pairs of ospreys in south Cumbria.
