The Red Lion

at Britwell Salome.

Our daughter drove us here and took as out for dinner here as a great treat (in part to celebrate our recent wedding anniversary). The pub had been recommended to our daughter by her former boss at work, and the place is truly excellent.

I have set up a "presentation" of photographs, menus, and so on, and added introductory slides with explanations so that I do not have to generate all the links externally. Once the file is loaded, you can run the presentation as a slide show (CTRL <f5> on a PC), or access individual frames.

Britwell Salome is at the foot the Chilterns and it appears to be little more than a few houses, a pub and a farm.

Next to Britwell Priory is the parish church of St Nicholas which dates from the 13th century.

To the south west of the village is Britwell House with its extensive grounds which include a limestone column which was built in 1764 as a monument.

From the village a straight lane leads up the steep scarp slope of the Chilterns to Britwell Hill and allows a superb view out over the Oxfordshire countryside.

The 'Red Lion', built of flint and finished with brick, dates from 1838. It was evidently the best inn in the village (of three) in 1841 when the tithe commissioners used it for their meetings!
