Chatelherault

Chatelherault was designed by William Adam, for James, 5th Duke of Hamilton.  It was completed in 1844 and it was built to deceive, as it gives the impression of a palace looking towards Hamilton Palace on the northern end of the grand avenue.  The Palace was demolished in 1920's due to mining subsidence, but Chatelherault survived as a ruin until 1979 when it was restored by Historic Scotland and the former Hamilton District Council.

It now has a visistor attraction including a gift shop, cafe, heritage exhibition and display gallery, and also caters for weddings and conferences.

The country park is over 500 acres of countryside and with the River Avon meandering through woodland gorge to meet the River Clyde.

Today my Wednesday girls walked the Green Bridge walk and then after a snack at the visitor centre, headed along the river back to Hamilton from where we caught a bus home.

We did eight miles in beautiful sunny weather and felt very lucky to be able to!!!!
