Two in a Million

Went to visit the site of the infamous Quarry Hill Flats in Leeds, built in the thirties and knocked down in the seventies. In its place stands the headquarters of NHS England - an extraordinary beast of a building, reminiscent of something Stalin might have had built. It stands in the very centre of the city in scruffy grounds, where a dry, weed-infested moat is overlooked by an overgrown strip of garden where I spotted these two elderly down-and-outs lying in the grass together. The juxtaposition of these unfortunates and the needless excesses of government seemed apposite somehow on a day that it was revealed that a million people in the last year were recipients of parcels from foodbanks
