The hwítingtréow

The whitebeam (Pyrus aria) trees in the garden are coming into leaf and flower.

The origin of the name white-beam seems to be a matter of debate. Some argue that it simply refers to the whitish underside of the leaves. Others believe that it come from the Old English hwítingtréow, or whitten-tree. Being an old romantic I much prefer the latter.
