People on a Bridge

The Artist

This is Adrianne, a good friend and an artist. We saw each other at a party at mutual friends' house, and caught up. We discussed the ever important issues of creativity, and pursuing what one loves, even though it may seem "useless". She said two interesting things:

Firstly, she quoted someone else, who said "art is a language". She was referring to the fact, that one learns it like one does a language: first come words, then phrases, sentences, metaphors, etc. First you learn the basic characteristics of a medium, and then you continue to study it, learning more and more about it. And it takes continuous practice.

Secondly, I asked her why does she do it, why does she make her art (mostly 3-D sculptures, often out of various fibers and fabrics). She said to her it is about the joy of visualizing something in her mind, and then bringing it into existence in the "real" world. Most of the time it is not what she imagined, but it doesn't mean it is worse; it is just different. We decided that one of the measures of creativity is a number of clearly different iterations it takes to end up with something one likes, something that feels like a finished product.

It was a great conversation, and we hope to continue it.

World's greatest artist.
