A Miracle Baby

This one shows a baby boy from Past Lusangazi farm. I saw a “go-go” walking in the road the previous night and she was looking for a lift. She seemed alone and a little distressed with a big package on her head. I stopped and two more women appeared. I was told one was “sick” and when she got in I seen the bump. She had already walked over 8km, and had about 3/4km to go. When we arrived at the hospital her mother in law wanted to pay.

Elaine, Alepher, Aisling and I went in the following day to see how she and baby was. It was a baby boy and he was in great health. The postnatal ward had about 18 mothers in it. Their families are responsible for food and basic care, and most of the beds had a bit of a mattress on the floor beside them. The other mothers were very excited to see the visitors in, the mother herself (18) was just overwhelmed. We gave her a small care package including the white blanket shown. It was a beautiful crochet blanket made by Kathleen Fidgeon from Shercock, whose daughter had organised the recent Coffee Mornings. Id been keeping it for a needy recipient at the birthing centre but this one landed instead. We will hopefully get to check the needs of his village before he grows much older.
