Newcastle life

Barter books- my new favourite place!

The weather was fantastic yesterday but was back to being grey and drizzly today, however I stopped caring about the weather after finding this amazing place called Barter Books!

I love books and spend a lot of time browsing in book shops but even people who aren't into books would still love this place. It's inside what many years ago used to be Alnwick railway station. It's a grand Victorian station that is filled with second hand books and is one of the largest 2nd hand bookshops in Britain. The old waiting room is beautifully tiled and you can sit by the open fire and read a book here for a while and help yourself to fine Pumphreys coffee, with a donation to the honesty box. There is also the station buffet which sells delicious food and a children's play room. A toy miniature steam train runs on tracks above the bookshelves. They are home of the original "keep calm and carry on" poster which they found in 2001, this has now been copied globally to become an iconic poster.

They have all types of books here but I was happy to find a lovely old local history book. It's open until 7pm each day so I will definitely be making another trip there soon as it's only a 40 minute drive north of Newcastle.
