Quaker Meeting House, Jordans

This Meeting House is one of the oldest in the country and was built in 1688, shortly after the Declaration of Indulgence in 1687. The Declaration granted broad religious freedom in England by suspending penal laws enforcing conformity to the Church of England and allowing persons to worship in their homes or chapels as they saw fit. The Declaration was supported by William Penn and he was widely perceived to have been its instigator. Penn's grave lies within the grounds of the Meeting House.

Unfortunately the Meeting House suffered a serious fire in March 2005 and the roof was severely damaged. It was repaired using the remaining structural timbers, supplemented with new timbers and following the original design.
