Migration

Sandhill Cranes are one of the birds that pass through areas of the Kenai Peninsula on their annual migration north. Here there are many wetlands that provide food and a place to rest.
I pass this little swampy spot on my way to town, and while I was taking this picture a man stopped and told me that last year a nesting pair lived here for awhile. Maybe it was this couple!
They fly over quite often, and have a very distinct cry that is a sure sign of spring or fall, depending on their direction! Sometimes we can hear the whooshing sound of their wings.
