Pier Square

in Ardrishaig.

Once a very busy and important point for travellers to the West of Scotland. At one time to travel from Glasgow to Oban you would have boarded a boat in Glasgow and steamed to Ardrishaig. Here you would have left the first boat to board a smaller one, called the "Linnet" to go through the Crinan Canal before boarding another steamer to Oban. This is the landing point in Ardrishaig where you would have crossed to the linnet. I have seen pictures of horse drawn stage coaches parked in the square to take the luggage. It must have been a very busy place.

The Crinan Canal is in the foreground.

Now it is very quiet, the house is owned by the canal board and house their offices, there are a few business's opposite but most of the buildings are used for storage. I have chosen it for my blip today because there are rumours of redevelopment afoot. Maybe a new café with outside seating and some tourist shops. The whole place will change again but today this is what it looked like.
