Suomenlinna

Last night I got this idea of going to Suomenlinna today. When I woke up the weather was quite rough; it was snowing a lot and and it was very windy. But when I get an idea, I usually stick with it.

Driving the car to Helsinki was already something of an adventure. It was very slippery and the roads were covered with snow. I got just in time to jump on the ferry, which left straight away. It takes only about ten minutes to arrive to Suomenlinna from Helsinki Harbor.

Strangely there were quite a lot of people, especially tourists from many different countries visiting Suomenlinna, even in this crazy weather.

The photo is from arriving to Suomenlinna. What you see in the water of the image is not water disturbance. it is ice floating in the water, because the ferry breaks the ice on it's route from Helsinki to Suomenlinna. The sea is covered with ice from the coastline far to the sea, only the ferry routes are "open".

Suomenlinna is a historic sea fortress, a popular attraction and a place where people live. It was included in Unesco?s World Heritage List in 1991 as a unique monument to European military architecture.

P.S. You might want to look at the photo as a large version.
