Down in the valley: Corfe Castle village

This photograph looks northward from the village of Kingston.

The unfenced land in the near distance is Corfe Common. Behind it is the village of Corfe Castle, with castle and church as its most distinctive buildings.

To left and right in the photo, like bookends, are West Hill and East Hill repectively, marking a break in the Purbeck Hills; between them is the castle mound which in earlier years controlled the principal access road.

Behind and a little to the right of the castle is the woodland of Arne peninsula. This houses the RSPB nature reserve and stretches down to the southern shore of Poole Harbour, the western end of which can be glimpsed to the left.
