Glasgow School Of Art Fire

We were in Glasgow this evening to watch the touring production of "Wicked", a show that we very much enjoyed.

As we arrived at the theatre, however, the air was heavy with the smell of wood smoke, and the streets were hazy with smoke. Why? A major fire had taken place in the Glasgow School of Arts building.

This famous building, with features by, and containing many prperties of, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, apparently caught fire earlier today. The College was rapidly and efficiently evacuated - nobody was injured - but the building itself was damaged quite significantly. Worse, this was the day of the submission deadline for students' work to be evaluated for their degrees.

The Fire Brigade done an amazing job - they say that about 90% of the structure and 70% of the contents of the building have been saved. But what a shame that this beautiful building would be so damaged so quickly.
