Lunch at Spences Bridge

Shingled and steepled,
the bell is strangely silent...
Who has the door key?

St. Michael and All Angels Anglican Church (Nlak'pamux Church) sits beside the Trans Canada Highway at Spences Bridge. It was built in 1905 to replace the previous church that was lost in a landslide that wiped out the Indian village on the other side of the Thompson River. This unusual little church is on the edge of the village of the Cook's Ferry Indian Band. It has a shingled steeple and seems to be quite neglected now.

From the church one can look northwest across the river to see the Murray Creek Falls (sometimes called the Spences Bridge Falls). Surprisingly, these falls flow consistently out of one of the driest areas in British Columbia. Water falls in two drops for a total of 161 feet/49 meters. Murray Creek appears to be the water supply for Spences Bridge.

We were on our way home to Kamloops today. We parked in front of the church for our picnic lunch. Rain clouds were blowing over the mountains from the west so our lunch was inside the travel trailer.
