Kelvingrove Park Bandstand reopens

This evening on the way home I made a detour to view the Kelvingrove Park Bandstand after its reopening today. I was a bit disappointed as it was closed and access was fenced off. A bit strange, but I never let these things stop me.

The 90-year-old B-listed bandstand reopened in Glasgow's Kelvingrove Park following a £2.1m refurbishment. The 2,500 capacity venue will host a music festival, featuring Teenage Fanclub and Squeeze, in August.

Built by the Glasgow Corporation Parks department in 1924, the bandstand closed in 1999 and fell into disrepair.

It is good to see there is money around to rescue this building, as before the restoration, its condition was described as "critical" on the Scottish Buildings at Risk Register.

The bandstand's revamp was carried out by Glasgow Building Preservation Trust in partnership with Glasgow City Council and Glasgow Life, with help from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Let us hope that money can be found to secure the future of a number of important Mackintosh Buildings that are currently in need of urgent restoration.
