Main Street, St Kilda

An ambition fulfilled. This was my fourth attempt to get to St. Kilda in a sailing boat. As it appeared out of the mist of a grey dawn it felt as I imagine seeing Everest for the first time might be. We arrived at Boreray soon after 6am just in time to see a rowing skiff departing for Portree just to put our own adventure into perspective! Dolphins and puffins accompanied us as we approached and the first detail we saw on the rock turned out to be carpets of gannets. The bird life was incredible. After a few hours to catch up on sleep conditions were perfect to go ashore. The village is astonishing with hundreds of cleits which were used to air dry and store the birds that the inhabitants collected from the cliffs. The Soay sheep are left to their own devices not being sheared they were in the process of moulting their coats and they are not used for food so seem to lead an idyllic life! We spent the day wandering around the island seeing much but with so much more to see. I hope I will be back. Sorry I can't share more pictures with you but I still cannot make links to flickr for some reason.
