Seal of approval

After lunch today, Farmerboy and I headed off to Tauranga Bay for the afternoon. The boys didn't want to come so they stayed at home.

Tauranga Bay is approximately 15 minutes drive from Westport. There's a lovely walk to a seal colony which we went on. This mum and her pup where showing a bit of affection to each other - after I took the photo, the pup had a drink from it's mum.

All the seals are electronically tagged, so the Department of Conservation (DOC) can keep track of them. There are three seal colonies on the West Coast, and each colony has tagged its seals with different coloured tags, which makes it easier to see how far these mammals have traveled.

After our walk, we visited the Bay House Cafe and sat outside on the deck having afternoon tea, and admiring the view of the sea. There were three brave surfers in the water, waiting for the right wave to come in so they could ride it on their boards. They must have been freezing!

I took lots of fantastic photo's of the beautiful scenery, and the surfers, but this one of the seals won it for me. Aren't they amazing animals?
