The Castle of Mey

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother first saw the castle in 1952. She holidayed here every year until her death. It is the most northerly inhabited castle in Britain, overlooking the Pentland Firth.

We enjoyed our visit, excellent guides in each room, with so many stories. French champagne with ice at every dinner time - I liked that little detail. The gardens are lovely, the beautiful scent of roses in her favourite spot. There is a small farm, and an interesting exhibition commemorating World War 1, and the effects on the local community.

On to Dunnet Head, the most northerly point in the UK, followed by a drive to Drumhollistan in search of puffins. Scottie5 had sent me precise instructions. We found the place, but I didn't have the courage to descend the cliffs to get close to the birds. I did get some shots in this wonderful, remote location, but not as good as hers earlier this week.

This evening the weather is closing in, and a storm brewing.
