The Edge of the Wold

The bokeh background to the spider's web somehow put me in mind of a kaleidoscope. The white is actually the flowers of brambles behind. The spiders are still small at this early stage in the summer - after a few meals, a few rounds of ecdysis and they will be much bigger. Not far away from here on the Knott, the rugby-jerseyed caterpillars of cinnabar moths are feeding on ragwort, and like the spiders they are still diminutive.

It's time for Gus's evening walk. The question is whether to come back in time for the Netherlands Argentina match (or has it already started). Last night I sat in the bath and listened to the extraordinary match between Germany and Brazil, the commentators couldn't keep up with the goals. Poor Brazil, they couldn't have been more comprehensively humiliated, particularly as the World Cup hosts.
