The Edge of the Wold

Sipping

A dark green fritillary sipping nectar from bramble flowers. Seen through the underwings, the silhouette of her abdomen is looking very dilated. I'm guessing that she is full of eggs. Shortly before this was taken I saw another female ovipositing on dog violet leaves.

The photograph I would like to have taken was of the grayling that landed on Gus's head, but alas he shook it off.

Otherwise, most of the day was spent in the garden taming the wilderness, with Reggie rampaging through the clover hoping for strawberries as he heard our voices, and Gus keeping a respectful distance from him.

After a week of dry weather, this evening the rain has arrived. We need it.

ps this was blip no 1200, it's remarkable how they accumulate, even when days are missed each week.
