Sandy Culture

In a long-disused parcel of land behind my sister's place on Long Island, a firewood operation recently materialized. The trunks of trees felled by Hurricane Sandy in 2012 are brought in from other parts of the island, then cross-cut with chain saws and split. Some of it is hardwood (mostly red oak), but there is quite a lot of softwood in the mix. There will be sorting involved to separate the cord wood from the kindling.

My nephew Bobby believes that the state owns the land, but who cuts the logs is still a mystery. This might be the first dedicated use it has ever seen, as far as anyone here knows. Bob is used to making other use of this sandy place.
