All About Barns

Swaledale has many beautiful old barns of different shapes and sizes, on the valley bottoms and hillsides. We have been so lucky with the weather and today was another hot, sunny day. We began our walk along the river from Muker ( Norse for narrow field ) through hay meadows and passing some lovely barns. We climbed up toward Arkengarthdale which gave us a wonderful view over the village of Gunnerside. Returned to Muker on The Little White Bus, a service organised by volunteer drivers when the official bus service was lost. The great thing about traveling on public transport is that one learns lots of interesting info. about the area from the chatty locals!
Back to Muker for rucksacks, then a lovely walk to Thwaite ( from old Norse meaning a clearing ) time for some local ale and a swim in the river before catching the bus to the station for the journey back to Ilkley.
