Gillipaw's Journal

Orphir Bay, Orkney

A visit to the Orkneyinga Saga Centre and Earl's Bu, followed by a walk along the cliffs, with views over the peaks on Island of Hoy. A bit cooler and cloudy today. I do love the colours of the heather and flowers along the cliffs. Several Bonxies (Great Skuas) gliding past us, so interesting to watch them hardly flap a wing, just catching the wind.

Late afternoon and evening socialising. First, a visit from Lord and Lady Findhorn, who had arrived back from cycling on Sanday. They are residing in an up market residence next door to us and came in for coffee. What to do, when our rental only provides Tesco mugs, and no fine bone china for such honoured guests. A lovely hour hearing their own Orkneysagas, and sharing hints on books to read by GMB and Peter May.

After dinner, a walk around the Peedie Sea to the local campsite after hearing from two families who are campervanning and camping there. We could hardly believe it when we discovered they are actually pitched next to each other by complete coincidence. And the campsite has free wifi, whatever next! Much chat about where to go and what to see, as well as the joys of having to reverse the campervan onto the ferry. So it would seem that Kirkwall, Orkney is the place to be this evening. I wonder who else we will meet before returning home.
