Apparently quite a common occurrence though most people don't seem to see it often. Scientific name : parhelion - and it has to do with light bouncing off ice crystals in the atmosphere.

Was trying to keep the sun off the phone's camera's sensor with the netball pole but as you can see, mostly failed.
I remain astonished that the thing keeps working.
