Bastia

We arrived in Bastia mid morning after a night drive to Gatwick airport and a two hour dawn flight. Bastia is the capital of the Haute-Corse region, the second largest city in Corsica with a population of 43 thousand. Sleepless but curious we wandered the backstreets and bumped into a fruit and veg market where all the produce seemed sun drenched, and found a little cafe nearby where I could exercise my schoolboy French. Discovered it is expensive and the coffee isn't great but the local beer is pretty good.

This is a street near the waterfront and the principal port of the island. A lot of the buildings are colourwashed and glow in the Mediterranean light
