...of a bygone era. Found this old ledger and eyeglasses in the small town of Micanopy (mick-ah-No-pee) Florida. We visited the town's small but very informative history museum. The town of Micanopy encompasses 1.03 square miles and is located just south of Gainesville. At the last census (2010) it was home to 600 souls. It has a rich history going back to aboriginal records which show that Hernando De Soto visited an early Timucua Indian Village there in 1539. The town of Micanopy was founded in 1821 and is considered the oldest inland town in Florida having been included in a land grant made by the King of Spain in 1817 to Don Fenando del la Maza Arrendondo of Havana and St Augustine. Fort Defiance was built there in 1831 to house and protect soldiers during the Second Seminole War.(1835-1842). A trading post was established and eventually grew into an important crossroads for the railroad transporting citrus and sugar cane. In more modern times, several movies have been made in the area.
