Hydro excavation is the science of digging with water. Self-contained trucks dig with 2000-3000 PSI water, forced through a steel lance and small stationary or rotating nozzles. They then vacuum the resulting water and soil slurry through an eight inch vacuum line into a debris tank to be dumped at the end of the day. They uncover pipeline, phone lines, fiber optics - and anything else buried up to 30 feet underground without damaging any expensive or hazardous lines.

Today they were on Saltspring Island to check for underground contamination from a defunct Gasoline Service Station. It looked like they were giving the road a giant root canal.
