Sad Day For Eastbourne

First Brighton, then Hastings and now Eastbourne.

At 3.15pm, a small fire started in the wood panels of the Blue Room. That small fire soon turned into a full blown blaze that took hold of this iconic structure.

Opened in 1870, it was a major part of many peoples lives who grew or visited this beautiful seaside town. I have many memories of walking round the pier as a youngster and playing Space Invaders and Pac Man in the very room that has now been totally destroyed.

We felt we had to go and see the damage for ourselves tonight and we found that it was still burning and the floor was falling into the sea. The fireman have obviously done a heroic job in preventing the fire from spreading further but even as we were there the police were moving the cordon further back as they feared it may go up again.

A very sad and emotional evening.
