All the local TV stations sent reporters to cover the Remembrance Event at our local park by the memorial for Officer Henwood.

There were microwave filming vans from Channels 10; 8; 7; 6; 5 (plus one unmarked van).

"Thursday is Jeremy Henwood Day in City Heights. Three years ago on August 7th, the much beloved and respected San Diego police officer was shot and killed by a suicidal gunman. It happened just moments after Henwood bought a cookie for a little boy at the local McDonald's. A scene by a store security camera touched so many, both because of the cop's act of kindness and what happened moments afterward.
San Diego police officer Jeremy Henwood, who was dedicated to making the diverse neighborhood of City Heights safer, bought a cookie for a boy he didn't know at the City Heights McDonald's. Moments later, the 36-year-old Henwood - a Marine Corp Reserve officer who served in Iraq and had recently returned from Afghanistan - was shot and killed by a suicidal man as Henwood sat in his patrol car. The man was later killed by officers in a shootout.

The grief felt by an entire department was shared by the community Henwood served. City Heights residents pushed for a nearby park to be renamed in Henwood's honor; the dedication was this past February. Thursday morning at Jeremy Henwood Memorial Park, Henwood's parents returned, accompanied by officers and Marines, for a celebration of their son's life. Mayor Kevin Faulconer said Henwood represented the best of who we are as San Diegans.

"Today is a special day as we remember Jeremy, what he meant and what he continues to mean. And to his parents, we say we will stand behind you and will always stand behind you."

Earlier, Beverley and Robbie Henwood were just up the street at the McDonald's during a day-long fundraiser in Jeremy's name - a portion of the restaurant's proceeds, along with donations and money from a police raffle outside, going to the Police Orphans and Widows Fund. Beverley and Robbie Henwood spoke of their loss live on "Good Morning San Diego":

"We, of course, think about him everyday, but it's heart-warming to know that the force thinks of him. And to do this yearly on the anniversary of his death, is amazing," said Beverley.

The essential refrain from everyone involved in the remembrance: it is our duty to never forget Officer Henwood."
