Sri Lanka - Day 4 - Dambulla Cave Temple

After breakfast we climbed up lots of steps to visit the Dambulla Cave Temple considered to be the largest painted caves in the world. Why are Buddhist temples always on the top of a mountain? At the bottom is this kitsch golden temple.

Afterwards we pampered ourselves with a massage, then Karen bought half of a wood carving factory. We ended the day with a three hour visit to Polonnaruwa - the Medieval Capital of Sri Lanka - 11th Century AD. Our guide has been on the site for 37 years.
