Pincushion

Wikipedia (ever reliable) tells us that the Pincushion Protea, or Leucospermum genus, "is a genus of about 50 species of flowering plants in the family Proteaceae, native to Zimbabwe and South Africa, where they occupy a variety of habitats, including scrub, forest, and mountain slopes". They could add "as well as many gardens in Johannesburg" to their descriptive.

This one (I think it's Leucospermum cordifolium) has flowered all through the winter although not with complete symmetry; the red and yellow stalks (or "styles" to be technically correct) have skewed themselves as they've leaned towards the rising sun. Maybe they'll straighten out in summer.
