Waterblommetjies

Waterblommetjies (Aponogeton distachyum if you want to impress your foodie friends around the dinner table) are native to the Western Cape, where they grow in ponds and dams, thus their English name, Cape pondweed. When I still lived in the northern parts of the country, I could only get them tinned. I now feast on them whenever they are available fresh during their short season.

They taste somewhat like green beans, and are usually made into a stew with lamb and potatoes. Delicious.

No guesses what I'm serving up tonight!
