It's Grim Up North

Clearances

(Thanks to all of you for getting yesterday's Blip into the spotlight.)

The ruined remains of the small villages that were abandoned when English landowners decided they wanted land for sheep rearing can be seen all over Scotland.

Exploitation of the poor by the powerful never seems to leaves us, though post 2nd world war Britain showed that gaps can be narrowed if there is the will to do so. Many of us born soon after the war benefited from that temporary closing of the gap.

Anyway, this abandoned home, complete with iron bedstead is one of 8 or 9 houses that made up the settlement of Doireaonar.

Doireaonar is now the croft where we stay every summer and our sitting room window looks out over these deserted homes.
