Sundew

Spurred on by the thought of doing a companion book to the first, we've decided to tackle the loop walks on the Sheep's Head way. There are 11 of them and most of them venture up high and onto the mountain. We decided to start with the Barán Loop which begins close to us, wends its way gently up through farmland then heads off steeply up and around Rosskerrig mountain then comes back again through bog and heathland. It was a bit grey weatherwise but an invigorating walk and our knees are now suffering. The going up was steep as we left the last track and clambered upwards, watched by lazy black cattle. We ate some incredibly healthy but very boring crispbreads, plus cheese an apples on top of the world. Sublime views in every direction but the light was a bit dull for anything that did it justice. So much colour close up though - purple heather and yellowgorse, dark orange pods of bog asphodel, feathery white bog cotton, windblown thistles, and masses of delicate grasses. My blip is of a nest of sundews - actually very teeny. They make a red fringe at the edges of bogs and entrap unsuspecting flies - see link at the end. We scrambled down a knee twinging descent, back onto a green road where there were lots of blackberries to be had. Very enjoyable.
