Lewis chessmen

I find these the most intriguing objects in the British Museum. Made between 1150 and 1200 AD they perfectly capture the link between art life and the game of chess. The expressions on the king and queen talk to us across the years. The king looks proud and confident with his sword in his lap, assured in everything that he does. By contrast the queen sits there hand on cheek looking worried. You can almost here her saying "Oh my Dear what have you done now?"
