Mono-Monday - Connections

This pair of modern surveying students are connected in a way unknown when I was fumbling my way around civil engineering practicals!
There is a theodolite positioned in the middle of the car park. The young lady's "warrior's spear" type object connects with a beam of green laser light, emitted by the theodolite, and reflects it back, indicating a height and distance from the theodolite.
The chap is holding a GPS tracker that is connected through radio waves with a satellite way above our heads, permitting an exact position to be recorded.
I know, a tenuous connection to the challenge! Ha! Ha!
