Fossil necklace

Go and see this exhibition at the Ingleby Gallery in Calton Road (just at the back of Waverley Station in Edinburgh.

Katie Paterson's exhibition is called "Ideas" and she has many good ones!

The catalogue says "A necklace of carved fossil sewn on era by era" seems every bit as unattainable as "The sound of the universe carved into a dot", and yet, here it is, hanging in Gallery II: a simple string of beads that collapses time before our eyes and confounds all notions of what is and isn't possible.

Among the 170 hand-carved fossil beads is one from Crail (!) "Stigmaria, Lepidodendron Tree Roots, Crail, Scotland". I have written of such discoveries in Crail before and again.

I was too much in awe of the gallery to ask if I were allowed to take photographs inside, but as I was walking past the window I was drawn to take a quick snap which doesn't really show it very well as the station opposite is reflected so well. Go and see for yourself.
