La Rivière d'Esperance

Went to Argentat today to visit an old Scottish friend whose husband died last year after 61 years together. She is dong wonderfully well. "Life goes on," she said. "Andrew would have been so angry with me if I'd just given up." She has been to the other end of the world and back to visit friends and family, is a regular bridge player, and still goes to Scottish country dancing - in spite of now being in her eighties. The wonderful home she shared with Andrew with its extraordinary views across the River Dordogne, is still full of him, and when we arrived this morning reverberated to the sound of Scottish accordion music. "The house is so silent without the music," she said. Upstairs is a room entirely dedicated to Scotland, with tartan carpet and walls. Her husband was a MacDonald, and she grew up in Perthshire. Together they spent 21 years in Africa, before moving to the south of England, and spending half of each year here in France. But I never met two people more in love with the country of their birth.
