View from the Govan Ferry

This morning I was in Glasgow about 8am, so I headed over to Govan to take a few shots by the river. It was grey this morning, but the river was flat calm.

I decided to take the Govan Ferry over to the Riverside Museum. This is a view from the Ferry looking towards the Riverside Museum and the Tall Ship. In the distance you can see the Science Centre and the Glasgow Tower. Worth looking large.

Glasgow's last remaining cross-river ferry took to the water this summer thanks to the fundraising work of a local community. The Govan ferry, which carried more than 500 people a day when it operated briefly in 2013, has provided a free transport service between Govan and the Riverside Museum throughout the summer. Around 20,000 people have used the Govan Ferry during its short run this year.

The project has been co-ordinated by Govan Workspace, a social enterprise, whose Managing Director, Pat Cassidy, explained: "The ferry was so popular last year when more than 16,000 people used it in just one month. Since then local people have never stopped asking when it's returning. It was really good for the area. Lots of visitors from the Riverside Museum came to see Govan's outstanding heritage, especially to enjoy the Govan Stones, a collection of monuments which date from medieval times. The ferry also gave Govan people easy access to the Museum and to the West End."

A variety of local organisations and businesses have combined to fund the new service, including Central Govan Action Plan, Govan Workspace, local housing associations, Premier Inns and the Council's Govan Area Partnership. Said Partnership Chairperson, Councillor Fariha Thomas: "I think the service can help re-establish the historic links that existed between Govan and Partick which sadly have been lost in recent years but which we still consider important."

The ferry event has also been supported financially by the Riverside Museum and Glasgow Life. Chairperson Councillor Archie Graham commented: "The crossing of the Clyde from the south bank of the river seems a very apt and interesting way to travel to the Riverside Museum and we are sure it will be a real delight for the many people who will use the service this summer."

The ferry service will operate until Sunday 21 September. Let us hope it will return.
